Sofa cleaning at home: how it works, drying time and how often
By J-Guard Services · Updated 3 November 2026
Sofa fabric traps dust, body oils, allergens and spills deep in the weave where a vacuum cannot reach. A professional shampoo lifts that out — but it is a wet process, so it helps to know what happens and how long the sofa will be out of use.
The six steps of a professional sofa shampoo
- Pre-inspection and fabric analysis, so the method and agents suit the fabric.
- Dry vacuuming of every surface, crevice and fold.
- Wet shampooing with upholstery-safe agents.
- Wet vacuum extraction, which pulls the dirty water out and leaves minimal moisture.
- Steam treatment to sanitise the fabric and remove odour.
- Drying and a post-cleaning inspection.
How long a sofa takes to dry
Allow 4–6 hours for a sofa to dry completely. Because the extraction step removes most of the water, most people use the room again the same day. Open windows or run a fan to help it along, and avoid sitting on the sofa until it is fully dry.
How often to clean a sofa
Every 6–12 months is the usual recommendation. Clean more often if you have pets or small children, or if anyone in the home has dust allergies.
How it is priced
Sofa cleaning is priced per seat, so a three-seater is three seats. Mattresses are priced per bed by size — single, double, or king and queen — and carpets per sq.ft. All three use the same six-step process.
Common questions
Can sofa shampooing damage the fabric?
Not when the fabric is analysed first and pH-neutral agents are used. Every sofa J-Guard cleans is inspected and its fabric checked before shampooing, and the agents are safe for all fabric types.
Can you clean mattresses and carpets in the same visit?
Yes. Bed shampooing and carpet shampooing use the same process, so they can be booked together with the sofa.
